Sis-in-law offered us a fine deal on an L2550 as she wants newer and more HP. Alas, she is told she can't get 2 speed pto any longer, so won't let go of her old unit!
First question: when did they quit using 2 speed pto on the L series in the 28 - 35 HP range? Keeping size down is important as she uses this with the bush hog to groom horse trails in dense woods.
2d question: She uses the hi speed (1000 rpm) at lower rpm's to keep the mower speed up. The nice fellow at the local repair shop became hysterical, insisting that a pto must be run at 1500 engine rpm or it would damage the clutch and pto parts. Fact or fiction?
Last, as I shop for her is there a designation that indicates the 2 speed is present?
thanks
Herb

What the heck does that mean. I often wonder this myself, often fool around with engine speed and ground speed. My B2150 actualy has four PTO speeds, my belly mower runs at the max. What is the reason for multiple speeds if you can't use them ....

We see snowblowers with 540 rpm shafts being run at 1,000 rpm. Need I say more, if it throws the snow better at a higher speed I bet it will throw it's parts better. ....

Thanks for helping.
I see the danger in overspeeding attachments (excessive wear or self destruction).
The question remains does running the pto at lower rpm cause any mechanical damage to the tractor?
And still, when did Kubota quit making (selling) the 2 speed? ....

Kubota's US designated tractors I'd say lost the option back in the early 80's. They are still used in other parts of the world so I don't know if they build them for those areas with that option. ....

My B5200 has two speeds, but in 22 years I have never used the higher speed setting. I asked the sales guy the question about this capability for the BX24 I just bought (which is only 540)and he asked me if I ever used the 825 speed on the B5200. I said no, and that was that. ....
